What a perfect ending to our "Candyland" themed March is Reading month! On Thursday, March 21st, Middle school students had the opportunity to celebrate March is reading month by making rock candy during science class. They learned how different types of candy are made, about the crystalline structure of sugar, how conduction and convection happen in the process and how to read a recipe. Of course they were able to test their chemistry experiment when it was cooled and cracked. Yum! Thank you to our parents who helped supply us with the needed materials to make this happen.

Our Transition to Middle School meeting was followed by a Fun Night for our 5th and 6th grades. Students received pizza and then spent the evening rotating through a variety of fun options such as karaoke, music jam, beading and crocheting, board games, video and computer games and a movie. A special thank you to Mrs. Price for planning the activities, and to the staff who volunteered their time to attend and supervise.

Students in 6th grade had the opportunity to dissect a sea lamprey during science class. They examined the internal and external structures of this Great Lakes invader. We are so thankful for our parent volunteers that came in to lend a hand in the process.

Miss Sugg's 5th grade Science classes welcomed Bradley Toth, Principal Scientist at Stantec Consulting, as a special guest today. Mr. Toth works closely with groundwater and soil as an environmental engineer to make sure that the water and soil around us are safe. If there is an issue such as an oil spill or something else, Mr. Toth is able to come up with solutions to remove the harsh chemicals from the water. Today he shared with us a little bit about what he does along with how we are able to fix some problems that could potentially arise with our drinking water. Holly Academy held Story Hour today for Pre-K aged children. We had a great time reading "The Biggest Snowman Ever" and playing a "roll and cover" math snowman game. Our next Story Hour is April 6th!

Six graders welcomed Dr. Dawson, a professor from the University of Michigan, Flint. Dr. Dawson also had a previous career with the US Fish and Wildlife Service. Dr. Dawson has spent many years researching the Great Lakes Sea Lamprey. Students learned how fisheries and biologists work to control invasive species in our Great Lakes such as the Sea Lamprey.
