Middle school student leadership and NJHS students attended the Base Camp Challenge Center to celebrate all their hard work this year. The highlight was the high ropes course. The middle school students have been experiencing many end-of-the-year activities! On Wednesday the 22nd, the 7th graders traveled to Michigan Adventures Amusement Park for a day of rides and time with friends. After school, Mrs. Klimaszewski and the 8th graders held the annual "Journey Through Genres" where they had the opportunity to share their writing portfolios with friends and family!

The 8th grade students traveled to Zekelman Holocaust Museum in Farmington Hills. They participated in a guided tour through the museum. Students had the opportunity to meet a gentleman who lived in Germany during the war. He happened to be touring at the same time we were. We learned his dad was Jewish, but his mom was not, so he lived never fitting in. At the end of the tour, students sat in the auditorium and listened to Ruth Alon speak of her parents experiences living in Poland. At age 13, Ruth’s mom was separated from the rest of her family to work in a textile factory. It was a very moving speech making this historical event become more real to our 8th graders. It was an amazing, worthy field trip.

Our 6th grade students are studying erosion and deposition in the Earth science curriculum. They decided on the variable they would test using the stream tables. Students worked through their procedures to ensure a fair test so they could validate their claim.

While CMU visited our campus this week, our Special Education department received some valuable professional development. Through an Ed Benefits review of a special education student's past 3 years of services, it was proven that our entire team created IEPs that met all of the requirements to increase student access to, participation in, and progress in general education. The day was full of insights, affirmations of our many strengths and suggestions on how to improve and refine our program even further.

Our sixth grade students traveled to the Genesee County Water Treatment Plant. They learned how water from Lake Huron travels 55 miles and ends up coming out of sinks and showers. Students also heard about potential career options and the schooling needed to obtain these jobs. It was a great learning experience.

What a perfect ending to our "Candyland" themed March is Reading month! On Thursday, March 21st, Middle school students had the opportunity to celebrate March is reading month by making rock candy during science class. They learned how different types of candy are made, about the crystalline structure of sugar, how conduction and convection happen in the process and how to read a recipe. Of course they were able to test their chemistry experiment when it was cooled and cracked. Yum! Thank you to our parents who helped supply us with the needed materials to make this happen.

Our Transition to Middle School meeting was followed by a Fun Night for our 5th and 6th grades. Students received pizza and then spent the evening rotating through a variety of fun options such as karaoke, music jam, beading and crocheting, board games, video and computer games and a movie. A special thank you to Mrs. Price for planning the activities, and to the staff who volunteered their time to attend and supervise.
